The first Radical Edge Club TT of the season went very well with 9 participants - a perfect number for me to get a handle on starting and timing. Thanks to Pierre for doing a perfect job holding!
I know that some people are trying this TT for fun, but for those of you who will be racing I noticed a couple of points for people to keep in mind. At the start, the rider should start when I say "Go" not when I say "One." Two riders started a second early and times were adjusted accordingly from what I announced at the end of the TT.
More importantly, by UCI rule, when one rider passes another it is the responsibility of the rider who is passed to drop back enough so that you are not in the draft of the rider ahead. You may not ride in the draft of the front rider at any time. Even if you feel you can re-pass the front rider, you must stay far enough behind and/or to the side that you are out of the draft at all times. Remember that at high speeds the draft is quite long - 5 bike lengths is much too close. Also, after 1 km (about 1 minutes) if you are unable to pass the other rider, you must leave a gap of 25m, even if you have to slow down to do it.
With that said, here are the results. The course was about 21.5 km, but I don't have an exact distance so I am not going to give average speed, just total time. Sorry about the formatting, but this is the best that html will do:
Name Min Sec
Justin Theriault 29 5
Adam Douthwright 31 10
Mike Davis 31 21
Jon Spinney 32 12
Kelly Murray 35 35
Nick Russon 36 14
Greg Violette 36 16
Natalie Cormier 38 55
Julia Cormier 39 34
I collected $8 and a $2 IOU. After expenses (stopwatch etc.) are covered, I will be donating the money to charity, so please remember your toonie.
Thanks! Hope to see you all next week for the crit!

Great job everyone! I got to the Ramada at about 5:50 but couldn't find anyone and didn't know about heading further up the road.
ReplyDeleteI'll catch ya next time!
Hi DVN,
ReplyDeleteSorry about that - we left at about 5:49. Next time.
I had 21.17km by GPS.
ReplyDeleteYou mean GPS mounted on your bike?
ReplyDeleteFwiw, I think the distance measured 21.5 km in the car and my PowerTap says it was 21.3 km.
ReplyDeleteyes, just my forerunner. I didn't have a magnet on my wheel, so it just used GPS for distance. @ 21.2km, by my calculations, that puts JT at 43.7kph.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I asked is that if the GPS is taking readings, say every 200m, it might 'cut corners' a little bit, so I would expect the GPS to come up with a distance that is just a bit short. How short depends on how often it is set to take readings and how twisty the road is. It might be a couple of tenths - that would only be 1%.
